You cannot prove a win you never measured. This is the exact measurement stack I install before writing a single word of content, in about 30 minutes, all free. It is the same stack running on my mom's shop (where it counted 143 AI citations between June 10 and July 23, 2026) and on this site, where I installed it at zero and screenshotted the zeros on purpose.
It is easy to do this backwards: write pages for months, install analytics, then wonder what worked. The problem: every number you brag about later needs a base. "Traffic doubled" means nothing if you cannot show where it started. I published my own site's zero (Google literally said "processing data") so that every future win has a receipt. Thirty minutes now buys you a provable story forever.
Search Console is Google's own report of how your store shows up in Search: queries, clicks, impressions, indexing problems. It is the closest thing to the source of truth.
Go to search.google.com/search-console and add a domain property. Search Console offers two property types, and the domain property is the one that catches www and non-www in one place. Verification happens with a DNS TXT record: your domain host (or Shopify, under Settings, then Domains) has a DNS section where you paste the record Google gives you. It usually verifies within minutes.
Then submit your sitemap: in the left menu, Sitemaps, then enter sitemap.xml and submit. On Shopify your sitemap already exists at yourdomain.com/sitemap.xml; you are just telling Google to read it.
What day zero looks like: "Processing data, please check again in a day or so." That message is the install working. Screenshot it. That screenshot is your baseline.
Microsoft's Copilot answers lean on Bing's index, and Bing Webmaster Tools now has an AI Performance report that counts citations of your site from Microsoft Copilots and partners. Skipping Bing leaves you with no count at all from the one engine family that reports your citations.
Go to bing.com/webmasters and choose Import from Google Search Console. Two clicks, done: your verified property and sitemap come over. Then find AI Performance in the left menu and look at your zero. Mine was a flat line at 0. Screenshot it.
Clarity is free behavior analytics (heatmaps, session recordings), and its AI citations dashboard counts how many times AI answer engines pulled from your pages, which queries they grounded on, and your share of authority on those queries. The 143-citations number I publish for my mom's shop comes from this exact report, exported and archived, originals kept.
On Shopify, install the Microsoft Clarity app from the app store and connect it; on any other platform, add the tracking snippet from clarity.microsoft.com. Then open the AI citations section and meet your zero.
GA4 answers what visitors do once they arrive. Three settings matter on day one:
First, data retention. Admin, then Data collection and modification, then Data retention: change event data retention from 2 months to 14 months. The default deletes your history without telling you.
Second, an AI referral channel group. Out of the box, visits from ChatGPT or Perplexity hide inside "Referral" and you will never see them. Admin, then Data display, then Channel groups: create a new group, add a channel named "AI / LLM Search" with the condition Source matches this regex, and drag it above Organic Search (order is priority):
.*chatgpt\.com.*|.*chat\.openai\.com.*|.*perplexity\.ai.*|.*copilot\.microsoft\.com.*|.*gemini\.google\.com.*|.*bard\.google\.com.*|.*claude\.ai.*|.*edgeservices\.bing\.com.*|.*meta\.ai.*|.*you\.com.*|.*poe\.com.*|.*phind\.com.*|.*deepseek\.com.*|.*mistral\.ai.*|.*grok\.com.*
If GA4 offers you a built-in "AI Assistants" channel, keep that too; the two work as a team, and the number you report is both rows added together.
Third, link Search Console. Admin, then Product links, then Search Console links. Now your search queries and your on-site behavior live in one place.
Before you close the tabs: screenshot every dashboard at its starting state and put the date in the filename. Then repeat monthly. A dated folder of exports is the difference between "trust me, it grew" and receipts. Every citation count I publish has a dated export behind it, and I can hand you the file. That standard costs five minutes a month.
You need more than GA4, because GA4 cannot see the thing you most want to measure. It reports what visitors do once they arrive, so it can only count AI traffic that actually clicks through. It has no view at all of how often an engine cited you without sending anyone. Search Console shows how Google Search sees you, Bing Webmaster shows how Microsoft's surfaces see you including Copilot citations, and Clarity counts the citations themselves. Four tools, four different questions, no overlap worth cutting.
Build a custom channel group, because the default setup buries it. In GA4 go to Admin, then Data display, then Channel groups, create a new group, and add a channel named something like "AI / LLM Search" using a Source-matches-regex condition covering chatgpt.com, perplexity.ai, copilot.microsoft.com, gemini.google.com, claude.ai and the rest. The full regex is in the section above, copy it. Then drag that channel above Organic Search, because channel order is priority and whichever rule matches first wins. Without this, AI visits sit inside Referral or Direct and the question becomes unanswerable.
Not citations. Search Console reports impressions and clicks, and since June 2026 it has been rolling out generative AI performance reporting that adds impressions from Google's AI surfaces. That tells you that you appeared. It does not tell you which answer quoted you. The rollout is staged, so check your own property. For actual citation counts you want Bing Webmaster Tools' AI Performance report and Microsoft Clarity's AI citations dashboard, both of which cover Microsoft Copilot and its partner surfaces. Neither of those sees ChatGPT, Perplexity or Claude, so be careful about claiming a number covers engines your instrument cannot see. Checked 28 July 2026.
All four are free with no card required. Clarity is free without traffic limits, GA4's free tier is more than any small business will need, and Search Console and Bing Webmaster Tools have no paid tier at all. The paid AI-visibility tools on the market mostly automate asking engines questions on a schedule, which is useful once you have a baseline and premature before you have one.
GA4 shows you in its Realtime report within minutes, and Clarity within a few hours. Search Console and Bing typically need a day or two before reports populate, and "processing data" at the start means the property is working. AI citations take the longest on a new site, because engines have to crawl your pages and then actually choose to use them, which can take weeks. That wait is exactly why you screenshot the zero now.
Before, and it is not close. Analytics added later cannot recover the baseline you did not capture, and every percentage you publish afterward needs that base to mean anything. A percentage without its starting number is how a small business result gets overstated, usually without anyone intending to. Thirty minutes of setup now is what makes a win provable later.
It is the share of cited sources that belong to you, on the queries where you appear at all. If an AI answer cites six sources and two are your pages, your share on that query is about a third. It is a useful number and it is narrower than it sounds, because it only counts queries where you already show up. It measures how strongly you are represented in a conversation you already appear in. It does not measure how many conversations you are in.
Next: find out what the engines can already see with the 10-minute check, or start at the beginning with the plain-English GEO guide. If you would rather take the whole site in the order to use it, start here. I publish my own site's numbers from this exact stack, zeros included, in The Receipts.
